Welcome to the Victorian Rakes History Blog

Why am I doing this? It’s a good question, one to which I don’t really have an answer. I have always loved history, it was one of the few subjects I enjoyed at school, inspired by a charismatic teacher. This enjoyment of history has carried on throughout my adult life as I am now in my early 50s.

At this stage I am unsure of how often I will be able to post content. I work full time and have a busy family life. However, I am an avid reader and watcher of all thing historical, with a special interest in the late Georgian and Victorian periods and this is what I will primarily post about. When I read a new book or watch something historical, I will write about it or, if time permits, review it.

I also intend to document my return to education. I graduated with a degree in History with American Studies in 1999, some 25 years ago. This year, when working through some personal issues, I decided to apply to study the Victorian Gothic: History, Literature and Culture MA, part time, over two years. It’s a distance learning MA offered by the University of Portsmouth. I start in September 2024 and can’t wait to keep you updated with my progress. Hopefully the cost of the course doesn’t mean I will end up in a debtor’s prison.

Tom Incarcerated in Debtor’s Prison by William Hogarth, seventh in the series of eight paintings, known as The Rakes Progress. The series was produced between 1732 and 1734 charting the fall of Tom Rakewell.
